Business calculator

Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about how Carbon Washington's proposal would impact your business

We'll ask you a few questions about your business expenses in order to best calculate how your household would be affected. We encourage you to skip around and to change your estimates to see how that affects the result.

For the best estimate, please answer all questions. The calculator will by default assume a value of 0 for all blank fields, which will affect the accuracy your results.

Curious about how we calculated a value? Check out the question mark icon icons for more detail.

Manufacturing B&O Taxes

If your business is not a manufacturer, please skip to Gasoline and Diesel Usage

The CarbonWA proposal effectively eliminates B&O taxes on manufacturing activities covered by RCW 82.04.240 (general manufacturing), RCW 82.04.2404 (semiconductors), and RCW 82.04.260 (1), (2), (4), (11), or (12)(b) (food products, timber and wood products, and airplanes). Because of the Multiple Activities Tax Credit, manufacturing B&O taxes may qualify as credits against other B&O taxes, or other B&O taxes may qualify as credits against your manufacturing B&O taxes.

For many manufacturers, the amount you would save is likely to be the state manufacturing B&O taxes you paid on goods sold outside the state; goods sold inside the state receive the Multiple Activities Tax Credit.

Gasoline and Diesel Usage

How much gasoline does your business use? Amounts for diesel vehicle, boat, and small plane fuel/mileage should also be included in the inputs for this section. Please choose one of these three calculation options:

Air Travel

How much air travel does your business do in a year? Please choose one of these calculation options:

Remember to add up the miles for each person. Example: Three employees from a single business fly from Seattle to Los Angeles, which is 1000 miles. 3 people x 1000 miles = 3000 miles.

First class or business class is taken care of automatically because they're more expensive.

Facility Energy Usage

How much energy does your business use? Please complete the steps below:

Step 1

Step 2

Choose the electric utility for your business (if the correct utility is not listed, first check that the zipcode is correct, and then contact us at carbon@cs.washington.edu):

Step 3

Do you know your business's energy usage in units of therms, kWh, etc. (from utility bills or another source)?

Step 4

Enter your business's energy use per year:
therms of natural gas
gallons of fuel oil
kWh of electricity

Step 4

We will attempt to help you estimate your business's energy usage by comparing it to an average house in Washington State. Note that this is just a ballpark estimate and may only be appropriate for certain kinds of businesses.

How is your business heated?
Natural gas
Fuel oil
Electricity
Wood or wood pellets
Other/don't know (we will assume you use natural gas.)

Step 5

How much purchased energy do you think your business uses compared to an average house in Washington (2000 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, etc.)? Enter this as a percentage. For example, if your business uses half the energy of an average home, enter "50". If your business uses twice the energy of an average home, enter "200":
